USC party becomes charity affair

A new generation of "givers" is emerging and changing the typical birthday party theme. Included in this new generation is 8-year-old Marlo Shiffman, who shared her birthday parties and presents with local charities to help those in need.

Upper St. Clair's Shiffman family has had family celebrations benefiting charities for years. Adina Shiffman has encouraged her son, Sam, and daughter, Marlo, to give to those less fortunate in a fun way that involves the community. This year, Adina approached Marlo about having a "charity party" for her 8th birthday instead of a birthday party, and without hesitation, she said yes, said Adina. Adina went on to say she is grateful to have the opportunity to plant seeds of giving in her community and in her children.

At her charity party, Marlo and her friends assembled and decorated large bins full of clothes, books, school supplies and toiletries that guests purchased to give to three local charities. Auberle, a social service organization in McKeesport dedicated to helping children and families heal themselves, was one of the lucky recipients of Marlo's gratitude and gifts.

"What a wonderful opportunity for children to reach out to those less fortunate and to do it in such a selfless way. We thank Marlo for sharing her 8th birthday with Auberle youth!" said Bridget Clement, director of development at Auberle.

The generous donation of supplies and gifts was given directly to Auberle residential programs to children in need. Adina and Marlo were sure to include items that most do not think to donate, but are necessities for Auberle youth including: socks, underwear, toiletries and school supplies.

"We would love for more young people to host charity parties to support Auberle youth. Kids helping kids is such a humble interaction to witness because children don't see races or socio-economic statuses; they just see other kids like themselves," said Cheryl Kubitz, volunteer coordinator for Auberle.
